ByzHub – New Kid on the Block

ByzHub's Owen Clark New Kid on the BlockAnother Happy Anniversary ByzHub!

What I like about my new business is that I get to meet a lot of interesting people both in my industry and other businesses; some are established, some just beginning and yet others are the up and comers – the new kids on the block.

Just about this time a year or so ago I met one such interesting person – an up and comer.  His name is  Owen Clark and he is the founder and president of ByzHub, a business directory service blended with social media marketing.  Brilliant!

As with most business directories it takes only a few minutes to register your business and put up your advertisement and it costs you nothing.  Owen took the traditional advertising model where typically a business would take out space in print, TV or radio and pay upfront and turned it upside down.  Traditional advertising can be a very costly line item in your budget.  Tracking results is cumbersome at best, and there are no guarantees of any result.  At ByzHub, you pay nothing to advertise until you get results.

Other features I like are:

1.       Latest Profile:   New members get front of page exposure under the heading Latest Profile.  This however is organic and a business enjoys this placement only until other new members come along.  ByzHub is still a young business and while more and more businesses are learning of it and filling up the ranks, the membership stampede is still just gathering, what that means to you is that your business profile will be in the limelight for a longer period of time.

2.       Local Search Citation: If yours is a brick and mortar business or if you are doing online marketing for an offline business, a listing in ByzHub gives you a valuable local directory backlink, or citation.  Search engines view these in much the same way that they look at backlinks to websites in the internet marketing arena.

3.       ByzBuzz:  this is the social media part.  Members can post what’s shaking at or in their business or in their community.  It’s a great way to advertise new merchandise, opening of another location or being honoured with an award in your industry.  The possibilities are endless.  Good place to post your press releases too.

4.       Quote Requests:  This is where members can post a free classified … yes Virginia, FREE!  If your business is looking for a social media consultant or a private math tutor for your child post it in the Quote Requests.  When the responses begin to roll in is when you as an advertiser pay but right now it is cheap as borscht, under five bucks!

Approaching its second anniversary, ByzHub is growing at an ever increasing pace.   Currently membership is open to businesses in North America – No Cost. Nada. Zip. Zero. Damn good deal if you ask me.

Gather Success Challenge IV – Retweet Challenge

Gather Success Retweet Challenge

Chirping for Retweets!

This week’s challenge at Gather Success is all about the ReTweet … the objective is to get familiar with Mr. Twitter, now that is a challenge and a half for me!  That is not good.  I’m not in the habit of getting familiar with any misters that I don’t know very well … and Mr. Twitter?  Why, we’re practically strangers!

Yes, I have a Twitter account.  Yes, I took a workshop with Matt Astifan on how to be a good Twit – no wait, that would be Tweeter.

No.  I have not been putting what I learned to practice.  I haven’t even got the tweeting thing down pat let alone the REtweet.

This challenge is forcing my hand.

There are points at stake and the winner even gets cash!  A whole $100 smackeroos.   All I have to do is get the following retweeted

I have noticed that there are some in the contest who have real savvy social media smarts but hey, who knows, maybe,  just maybe  if not the loot I can at least figure in the top three?  That will give me 50 points (in 3rd spot).

In addition to actually tweeting I can promote it through any online media – including blogs and email.  So if you’re on my mailing list, you’ll be hearing from me again

The difficulty level of this challenge is 6 out of 10!  It`s getting steeper all the time!

If you are a frequent visitor here, please feel free to retweet; yeah, I know.  No - whoring is too harsh, the word would be “chirping” thank you, please!

How to do this:  Login to your Twitter account.  Copy and paste the two lines below, and tweet it.

If you are a first time visitor – hey jump in the game!

And speaking of jumping in the game.  Each week`s challenge is a standalone module so if you want to you can still register and kick ass.   No seriously.  And then you can log on to the weekly webinar with Alvin – I have picked up so many tips.  Some I have posted here, but there really is soooooo much more … and it’s fun!

Twitter and All That Social Media Stuff!

Last week I attended an intensive workshop on social media marketing – 14 hours of hands on type stuff on Twitter, Facebook and You Tube.  I am always looking at ways that I can drive additional traffic to Blog Income Life so when Matt Astifan, a member of my Internet Marketing Mastermind group announced that he was running a small private workshop on social media I quickly jumped at the opportunity and thought this would be a good place to share.

This is not going to be a step by step dissertation on how to run your social media campaigns – just thoughts that flooded my brain as I sat through two very interesting and even fun filled days.  I think when you can say workshop and fun filled in the same sentence it has to have been a successful event.

We were a small group of five – I think it safe to say that each of us was a confirmed social media neophyte.  None of us quite understood the “why” of any of this phenomena but  were in agreement that we needed to get with the program and see how we can apply it to our own businesses.

Of the three disciplines Twitter was the one that captured my attention the most and entertained me the most, probably because it is like being in a foreign country; it also stretched my mind which surprised me as I had a tendency to dismiss all this babble on the net as just being mindless prattle about nothing.

We spent the better part of day one on this phenom and by its end each of us was a bonafide tweep – yes I know, there is this devil in me that wants to say twit but no, there are no twits on twitter, just tweeps who send out tweets in 140 characters or less.  Now correct me if I’m wrong because I have also heard the word peeps but would those be the tweets who are your followers?  You know “ … have your peeps get in touch with my peeps…” kind of idea?

First thing I notice as I am sitting on my very own perch “goldenkoi”  is that this is a very noisy world. Because I already had a twitter account set up from when I took the 30 Day Challenge last summer I actually had a small following of tweeps.    Spending just few minutes in my domain the tweets kept running like a ticker tape at the stock market.  After just 7 minutes I had well over 36 new tweets!  Now how the twit am I supposed to keep up with all this?   Imagine what the home perch looks like of  someone who has thousands and thousands of followers?  Ah but that’s not the point.

The point is relationship building and here was a revelation … for the longest time I believed that he who has the most followers wins, but the emphasis has shifted somewhat, it is now quality over quantity and how do you attract quality?  Keywords, my dear, keywords.  The right keywords attract the right followers and you can engage in short but meaningful conversations.

These conversations bring a whole new meaning to the phrase short conversation – at a max of 140 characters these aren’t even sound bites!  They are … aah, tweets!

Now trust me these birds might be short on their vocabulary but they’re no birdbrains as they have mastered the art of twittery and can lay a clear and distinct path of breadcrumbs that lead to a conversation that actually makes sense. The mastery lies not in just tweeting about “What’s happening” but in participating and engaging with others on a topic.  It takes a bit of time but I am told that soon I too can learn the nuances and proper use of just tweeting, RT (reply to), @ (the tweet or tweep), the URL and the somewhat confusing hashtag #.

Since attending the workshop I have visited my perch several times and selected a tweet to follow by clicking on the  appropriate links to see how far I can follow a conversation – gosh, I’ve even tweeted a few times!  You know it’s kind of fun.  After following only a few breadcrumb paths I have come to the conclusion that there are some really smart tweeps (and tweets)out there – it challenges the brain to be creative and I have come across bits of brilliance that are nothing short of awesome.

If you don’t have a Twitter account yet hop on over to http://www.twitter.com and open one.  Choose an appropriate username.  Here once again I committed the cardinal sin – my username is goldenkoi which means squat when it comes to either blogging or internet marketing.  When I first started visiting forums I chose that as my handle.  To me it has meaning.  I grew up in Japan where the koi is revered.  The fish comes in colors of red, white, grey, black and shades of gold so “goldenkoi” has intuitive appeal to me.  Matt suggested that I check to see if the domain was available – of course not.  GoldenKoi.com belongs to someone in the business of selling koi fish!

You can have several accounts with Twitter but not so with Facebook – so choose carefully as to how you want to brand yourself.

I found it interesting that in terms of developing online relationships there is a structure and that Twitter is where it begins.  Look at it as a funnel if you will.  You meet people at Twitter, get to know them better on Facebook and eventually that leads to loyal followers on your blog.  Sounds like a long and protracted process but it isn’t.

In my Internet Marketing Mastermind group there are members who have met key and influential people in their business that they would not have otherwise and those people were just as likely to be in their own backyard as somewhere across the world.  Aside from the growth in their social capital this process has also grown their businesses and bank accounts.

It is easy to get lost in the social media world and to let the time just drift away.  Be cautious.  Allow yourself a small block of time for your social media marketing.  I would say that 15 minutes twice a day is sufficient time to spend in this area of your business especially if you are just dipping your toes into it.

To Tweeting to Success!

The Power of a Mastermind Group

Monday I attended my regular Monday Night Internet Marketing Master Mind Group – we really don’t have a name, I just defaulted it to this. We started just a few months ago with only a few, last Monday I venture we were easily at 45!

We are a rag tag group.  Most everyone is in internet marketing.  There are people who are already successful with full blown companies and employ staff.  Others are employed  in IM or IT and moonlight on their own online businesses when not at the nine to five.  Then there are people like me – apprentices, and still others who have only just dipped their toes into this wonderful, mystical world.  For some IM is still very much a part time gig, for others their livelihood.  Everyone seems to have a blog or wants to get one started and develop a blog income business. We sit in as many chairs as can be crammed into the room, perch on anything that might give our bods some support or just lean against the wall. At some point in our lives we were all infected with the entrepreneur bug and now can’t shake the addiction – moreover, we don’t really want to.  Oh yeah, the venue is a beauty salon!

Those with credits of success and knowledge generously share their information with us.  Monday was Twitter night.  I added a new word to my vocabulary:  socialnomics. Did you know that Twitter is some four years old?  It hit the mainstream conscience a scant year ago and has been on an upward trajectory ever since.  Social media hasn’t been the easiest concept for me to embrace … I’ve got a Twitter account and a Facebook account and more that I don’t even remember opening accounts at, but largely they are ignored.  Periodically I will log on to one or the other to see if the seemingly senseless prater has gotten any better.  It hasn’t.  I leave without so much as a comment, tweet or whatever the appropriate verb is for the social site I am on.  There is a part of me that knows that I need to get with the program and learn how to socialize on these sites.  What I learned on Monday confirmed that.  More importantly I learned social media etiquette and how to have meaningful conversations which can drive traffic to your blog – now that is music to my ears

Is Tweeting for Bucks the New Blogging for Money?
There’s a Whole Lotta Tweetin’ Going On

Here is the thing, mastermind groups are powerful.  If you don’t belong to one, I strongly urge you to find one or form one.  As an example, in the short time that my group has been getting together (my first attendance was mid-September) we have progressed from watching videos to setting up projects, the intent being that we will participate in one form or another in making money with these projects.

About a month ago members were asked to pitch the group on a project that they want to launch. The following week  some ten people gave us an elevator pitch (2 minutes).  We voted.  The person who was selected will get the collective support of the group which includes technical and marketing know how.  The time frame is 6 months.  At the end of the six month period there will be a new product on the market. Another project is at the incubator stage, is taking a different model of development but it too will be a product.  We engage, learn and gain financial profit.

I think it is important to find a mastermind group that meets “in person”.  There are plenty of online or teleconferenced mastermind groups, but from my perspective you just cannot get the juice online that you do from an offline group.  The in-person dynamics just can’t be beat.

Happy Blogging!

Mastermind groups are big cheese.
